I just started to like oatmeal

I always thought oatmeal was an icky food. Give me a huge bowl of cereal for breakfast and I was completely satisfied. Heck, give me a huge bowl of cereal for any meal of the day and I was happy. Cereal is one of my all time favorite foods... Mmmmm... Cinnamon Toast Crunch (with 2% milk like at Gram's house), Wheaties, Honey Bunches of O's, Ohs, Cinnamon Life, Golden Grahams, Cheerios, Grape Nuts... Whatever, I like them all (except Cap'n Crunch - not so fond of that one). I.love.cereal.

But then I became a mom - for the third time. I was nursing Georgia, trying to do weight watchers, but having a hard time producing milk (am I really talking about this, because now I'm grossed out - and if I'm grossed out, you must be, too) and I went to one of the message boards on ww online and asked what I was doing wrong and what I needed to change. Someone kindly responded and one of the tips was to eat oatmeal - that it helps with milk production somehow.

I didn't want to try it because remember? oatmeal is icky. But I started having oatmeal for breakfast as a last ditch effort to lose weight while nursing. I soon learned that it had to be the old-fashioned kind, not the quick oats, that it needed at least 5 teaspoons of brown sugar, that 1/2 cup of dry oatmeal should be mixed with 1 1/4 cup of cold water and microwaved for 4 1/2 minutes on 50% power. This is now my breakfast of choice - even after I quit nursing.

Oatmeal is good. The texture is good. The flavor (with the brown sugar) is good. Its all good as far as I'm concerned.

And it did help with my lactation issues - just in case you're wondering.

QOTD:
What is your favorite cereal? And - Do you like oatmeal, if yes, how do you make it?

i have many favorite cereals - depends on the catagory. for healthier choices i like honey bunches of oats with strawberries or peaches, kashi heart to heart, or grape nut o's. for sugary choices i like fruity and cocoa pebbles, honey smacks, corn pops, apple jacks, lucky charms, and the list goes on and on.

i do like oatmeal, but not all the time. i like it with fruit on it and lots of brown sugar. my dad makes a pretty mean bowl of oatmeal. he considers himself somewhat of a connoisseur of oatmeal and the preparation of it. next time you see him, you will have to ask him about it.

I'm with you, Jana...pretty much any cereal is wonderful! :) It's funny you mention Cap'n Crunch, though. I LOVE it, but it has a very unpleasant side effect. In dental hygiene school, we called it "Cap'n Crunch mouth"...you know, where the roof of your mouth gets sore and swollen? It hadn't bothered me a ton before, but last week, as I cruised the aisles at Meijer, I noticed it was on sale, so I bought 2 boxes. I ate a couple of bowls of it, and the next day, the roof of my mouth hurt SO BAD I could barely eat anything! :( Good think Luke likes it...he finished it all off! :)
My favorite for a while has been Cracklin Oat Bran. Small, expensive boxes...it's on sale at Meijer this week 2/$5! :)

He's so healthy!!!

I like oatmeal with berries and walnuts. Yum!!! I also like it with lots of maple syrup. Of course, just about any hot breakfast food is better with syrup!

I love Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Cinnamon Life and Coco Puffs...but we don't get that here too often. When I do buy that kind of cereal, my kids eat the whole box in one morning!

LOL.... as I choked my oatmeal down this morning! I too eat oatmeal in the morning for "maintaince" reasons. I love cold cereal and would and have been known to have a huge bowl at various times of the day. But with my efforts at weight loss I figured that would be be a good way to start the day. I buy the instant by Quaker called 'weight control'. It's higher in fiber and lower calories. I can eat it plain with about a tablespoon of skim milk over it. I have to admit some morings I do enjoy it. :)

My absolute favorite cereal is cracklin oat bran. My other favorites are lucky charms and golden grahams- those 2 got me through college! The only oatmeal i'm fond of comes in the little packets- and it takes so many to fill you up!
anyways i'm having a hard time coming up with anything interesting to share to start a blog with- any suggestions?
