me = idiot

I had a conversation with my neighbor the other day. She and I hang out just about every afternoon while the kids run around outside or make a mess inside her house (they're scared of our pansy dog so they won't go in my house). I was telling her that I get irritated that I end up throwing a lot of cereal away in the morning because Dave gives the girls too much and they don't finish. I also am not keen on the fact that he gives Nora a dish of cereal AND a dish of oatmeal in the morning - thats 2 breakfasts in my opinion and they're both carbs... Besides - she's not eating her entire bowl of cereal - probably because she's also getting a dish of oatmeal. She (my neighbor) is of the opinion that one should give their kids as many choices as possible and they'll eat what they eat and if you have to throw something away then so be it. I, on the other hand, have watched how hard Dave has worked to earn the money to buy the food and it kills me to throw it away.

Have you ever had one of those conversations where the person you're talking to is soooo not on the same page with you that you can't get your thought across and the more you talk the more hideously stupid you sound - even to yourself? Regardless of the opinions that each of us held, it was one of those times where I kept trying to explain myself and the more I spoke the dumber I sounded and by the end I was questioning myself.

I'm not the only one who has done this, right?

Yep. It's just you. hee hee

Seriously, I have had the exact same conversation about the following

1. Bedtimes
2. Junk food~and exactly what is junk food
3. TV shows that the girls may watch.
4. Clothing they may wear.

I have also been there done that many times! Everyone has different standards so it makes some of those conversations really awkward.

You are not alone. I'm often not on the same page, but usually I am trying to find a way to not come off too opinionated. Usually I end up making no sense at all!

I used to live in that! I think it's great to have your way of doing things, but know that others may not do things the same. That's what makes the world full of variety. This is one of the things in life I am working on right now ... to accept that we all do things differently - I do what's right for me, others do what's right for them. I don't mean we should be accepting of just anybody's "way" if it's clearly unbiblical - but for the most part, I have to tell myself "Don't sweat the small stuff." It's hard not to think to myself, "why in the world would he do it that way?". It's also difficult for me to think to myself, "Is she judging me for the way I'm doing this? I hope I'm doing this right. I hope I'm meeting her standards." Um, yeah, that's why I'm in counseling!

OK a conversation I had today with a gal I know made me think of this post.... I decided early on in the (one sided) conversation that I should just stay quiet. I'm glad I did but then again I still feel like my way is better :)
